Sustainable green travel – local authorities in London have started dockless cycle and scooter hire schemes across the city’s 32 boroughs.
Each borough has a different dockless hire scheme, though most, not all, have agreements with several dockless cycle and scooter hire companies.
The dockless hire companies agreed with each local council a set of rules for both the hire company and users / riders – with rules for dockless parking.
This is where it gets a bit confusing – each London borough council agreed a different set of rules with the hire companies, some councils didn’t agree any.
Out of the 32 boroughs only 5 agreed for mandatory parking in dockless bays – leaving the majority of 27 London boroughs a wild west for dockless parking.
To add further confusion, not every borough signed up to a dockless hire scheme – or parking for dockless hire e-bikes and e-scooters in their local area.
For example: Cycling / Riding from Camden to Islington, the dockless hire scheme changes and so also does the dockless parking rules – confused yet?
Mandatory parking in a dockless bay:
- Camden
- City of London
- Hackney
- Ealing
- Hammersmith & Fulham
Everywhere else (other 27 London boroughs) park at the nearest bike rack, or neatly on the pavement.
Which leads us to the problem of dockless bikes and scooters obstructing London’s pavements, pedestrian crossings, green spaces, roads and bike racks.
